Trump, after night of mayhem at convention, takes center stage
Republican strategist Ron Bonjean said there was a muted tone at some Cleveland gatherings, which he attributed to the unique relationship between Trump and his party’s establishment.
“The day that was abdicated was the day this became personal”, Cruz said.
He then ad-libbed: “As a Republican, it was so nice to hear you cheering for what I just said”.
She told the Republican National Convention that her father is a fighter.
On Wednesday, former rival Ted Cruz delivered a speech at the convention but refused to endorse Trump, prompting loud boos from the audience.
“Decades of record immigration have produced lower wages and higher unemployment for our citizens, especially for African Americans and Latino workers”, Trump said. I mean that literally: Ben Carson, going way off script, tried to associate the former first lady, US senator and secretary of state with Lucifer.
The only way that Trump can rescue this convention from going down in history as one of the party’s worst is for him to somehow save the circus tonight.
Not everyone was critical, anti-immigrant Dutch politician Geert Wilders said Trump had a “great speech”. The caption read “the images are worth a thousand words”.
As the last speaker in a four-day marathon of events in Cleveland, Trump has his biggest chance yet to try to end the bickering among various factions of the Republican Party and foster a spirit of unity. He also disavowed America’s foreign policy posture under both Democrat and Republican presidents, criticizing “fifteen years of wars in the Middle East” and declaring that “Americanism, not globalism, will be our credo”.
“I’m glad the waiting game is almost over”, Kaine said Thursday.
In an interview with the New York Times, Trump was quoted as saying that he would decide to come to the aid of states under threat by Russian Federation, only after reviewing whether they had “fulfilled their obligations to us”.
Trump repeatedly mocked Cruz throughout the campaign as “Lyin’ Ted”. Trump also made suggestions that Cruz’s father had indirect links to John F. Kennedy’s assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald.
As he appeared on stage Wednesday night, Cruz basked in a minute-long standing ovation.
Trump took positions in conflict with traditional Republican policies.
“When a secretary of state illegally stores her emails on a private server, deletes 33,000 of them so the authorities can’t see her crime, puts our country at risk, lies about it in every different form and faces no effect – I know that corruption has reached a level like never ever before in our country”, Trump said.
Cruz didn’t tell the convention crowd that he plans to vote for Trump. But one gay Republican in particular – the first openly gay Republican to address a GOP convention since 2000 – brought the crowd to its feet.
After alluding to the recent attacks on police, he asserted, “I am the law and order candidate”.
Newt Gingrich spoke at the convention just after Sen. “Ted, stay home. Relax. Vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution”.
Clinton’s lead over Trump has been reducing every passing week. Trump paused as the woman was escorted off the convention floor before resuming his remarks.
But Trump said later on Twitter that Cruz’s lack of an endorsement was “no big deal!”
Analysts say a small bounce after a convention is natural, and say to give the race a couple of weeks after Mrs. Clinton’s convention in Philadelphia beginning Monday to let the surveys settle. Yet he also accused her of “terrible, awful crimes” and said her greatest achievement may have been staying out of prison. Will he install an elevator and descend to the platform, just like he did at Trump Tower when he announced for president a year ago?
“If we’re not going to do that, why do we have elections?”
