‘Sesame Street’ nixing three of its beloved characters
Sesame Street has let go of three of its beloved characters! When Luis married Maria, played by Sonia Manzano (who retired in 2015), the two would become an iconic pair in Sesame Street history, also helping to make Hispanic culture an instrumental part of the series’ background, while Orman took over the character of Gordon in 1974. He spent almost 50 years playing the character Bob, who was been the resident music teacher. Orman followed in 1974 – replacing Garrett Saunders, the original Gordon – and Delgado joined the Street in 1971 with his wife, Sonia Monzano, who played the beloved character Maria until her retirement a year ago.
“As of this season, I have completed my 45th season this year”. She also made clear that HBO has nothing to do with the production of the show.
During a panel at Florida Supercon on July 2, 84-year-old original “Sesame Street” cast member Bob McGrath, said that he, along with longtime costars Emilio Delgado (Luis) and Roscoe Orman (Gordon) had been let go by the long-running series.
Like many streets in America, Sesame Street has been going through a lot of changes recently.
‘Sesame Street’ put 3 cast members on the chopping block! The controversial deal garnered mixed reactions but ultimately meant more content and allowed the show to stay on the air after struggles in funding. “To us, and for millions of people worldwide, they are a treasured part of Sesame Street”.
In response to McGrath’s comments about HBO, Sesame Street’s official statement emphasized that Sesame Workshop has “sole creative control” over the series and that HBO does not oversee production. It now airs on HBO and PBS.
Luis (played by Emilio Delgado, seen with Louie) rounds out the three human characters who have been cut as HBO changes the show. Not Gordon, Bob, or Luis any more!
HollywoodLifers, are you shocked Sesame Street fired these actors?
