Is Trump’s convention polling bump for real?
The CBS poll also showed far more Republicans, 44 percent, are now likely to feel that their party is united compared to the 16 percent who felt so one week earlier in the run up to the Republican convention.
Mr. Trump told the Veterans of Foreign Wars gathered in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the group’s 117th annual convention that Mrs. Clinton has downplayed the problems at the VA and that her track record shows she is not ready to fix them. The two main candidates are followed by Gary Johnson, with 9%, and Jill Stein, with 3%. This is up 1 point from last week. As for who is more qualified, men went for Trump 51-33; women for Clinton 41-36.
“She recently said of the VA scandal that is it not as widespread as it is purported to be”, Mr. Trump said. Almost six in 10 Republicans and Republican-leaners were more interested in this year’s convention than previous conventions, and even three in 10 Democrats were more interested as well.
According to the Washington Examiner, Trump again brought up the rumor – which was printed in the National Enquirer – that Cruz’s father may have been involved in JFK’s assassination because Rafael Cruz was supposedly with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to the assassination.
He’s increased the share who call him honest and trustworthy (from 38% to 43%), and who would be proud to have him as president (from 32% to 39%). “They just looked at me and didn’t say anything”.
Hillary Clinton’s nominating convention opened with loud dissent, just like Donald Trump’s last week. Despite all this, and the pressure added by a few small protests, no one was shot at the GOP convention. The state wields 29 electoral votes (of the 270 that are needed to win the presidency), and it has been a fierce political battleground (Florida has flipped between Republicans and Democrats three times in the past six elections).
Two prominent convention speakers saw their stock rise post-convention as well. As the Democratic National Convention gets underway in Philadelphia, her support among Democrats has gone up slightly.
Trump’s convention speech, which was received well by Republicans watching the event, did not sit as well with Independents. Nearly 6 in 10 (58 per cent) said the Republican convention spent too much time attacking Democrats, and 18 per cent called Trump’s speech “terrible”. Eight in 10 Republican voters watched at least some of the convention, as did about seven in 10 Democrats and independents.
“What we hope to hear from both candidates is how they will fight our enemies while keeping America safe through strong national defense and homeland security programs”, he said. George W. Bush, the last successful Republican candidate, soundly won this constituency by 5 percentage points in 2004.
