Illinois delegates agree with Wasserman Schultz resignation
In a statement, Clinton said she was grateful to Wasserman Schultz for getting “the Democratic Party to this year’s historic convention in Philadelphia, and I know that this week’s events will be a success thanks to her hard work and leadership”. It wasn’t until July 22 that the Bernie supporters’ concerns came to fruition, when hacked emails appeared on WikiLeaks that showed some of the party’s staff scheming ways to hurt Sanders’ campaign in the primary contest.
The DNC has selected Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio) to preside over the convention this week and DNC Vice Chair Donna Brazile to be interim vice chair until November, CNN reported.
DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz faced chaos Monday morning – a chorus of angry boos and protesters’ signs at a Florida delegation breakfast greeted her address.
Grace McGregor Kramer, a Clinton delegate from Scranton, said, “it is clear from discussions with most Sanders delegates on the floor that we are ready to unite as a party”. The leaked emails revealed a systematic effort at the DNC to undermine the candidacy of Sen.
“I’m proud that, in the Democratic platform that was passed a few weeks ago, we are making some real progress”, Sanders said on CNN Sunday.
Sanders has backed her challenger in the primary, Tim Canova, a Nova Southeastern University law professor’. He added: “My focus right now is defeating (Donald) Trump, electing Clinton, electing progressive candidates around this country and focusing on the issues that matter the most to working families”. The convention begins Monday in Philadelphia. Obama said he placed a call to the Florida congresswoman Sunday afternoon, noting that she’s played a “critical role” in party victories, including on social and civil justice.
Sanders and his backers have long accused Wasserman Schultz’s DNC of putting its thumb on the scale to help Clinton.
Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid wanted her out even before the leaked DNC emails scandal broke and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi wouldn’t lift a finger to try and save her House colleague, sources said. When Sanders took the stage as the night’s final speaker, he acknowledged that many of his supporters were disappointed.
But, he says, “the struggle of the people to create a government which represents all of us and not just the 1 percent – a government based on the principles economic, social, racial and environmental justice – that struggle continues”. “If we really want to move forward, I don’t think we need to spark up that kind of negativity at our convention”.
