‘Postman Pat’ Voice Actor Ken Barrie Dies, Aged 83
Ken also sang the show’s theme tune, which spent 15 week in the charts after being released as a single.
A family friend confirmed the news to BBC.
Barrie, who was originally from Stoke-on-Trent, got the job after recording his voice on tape at the suggestion of the guitarist working on the show’s music and later said he never imagined it would be so popular. It followed the mailman’s gentle adventures in fictional Greendale village.
She said: “He was a master of different character voices”.
Ken was also a singer who performed for Embassy Records under the name Les Carle as well was providing the singing voice for a number of actors over the course of his career.
Barrie’s wife Doreen Hulme (right) died seven years ago.
He is best known for the BBC programme Postman Pat, being responsible of providing voices to many characters in the show including Pat, Ted Glen and Alf Thompson.
Barrie made a return to the franchise when he worked on Postman Pat: Special Delivery Service in 2008.
In 2009, he was part of the group Peter Kay’s Animated All Star Band on the BBC Children In Need medley.
