Promoting national unity, Clinton also seeks to build trust
Hillary Clinton accused Donald Trump of painting a misleadingly dark picture of American society.
Clinton’s speech offered a hopeful vision of America’s future, meant to contrast with Trump’s nomination speech from last week in which he depicted a country and world in chaos.
That may be a bit misleading, since Trump got a bounce from the Republican convention last week while any bounce from the Democratic convention, which ended Thursday night with Clinton’s speech and a display of fireworks at the Walls Fargo Center here, hasn’t had a chance to be measured. Democrats, and some leading Republicans, criticized Trump’s so-called doom and gloom outlook. No, the condemnation of an entire religion is not in line with American values. “I think we’ll stay here all night because I don’t really want to go home and watch that crap”, he said.
You don’t have to like Clinton.
LaDawn Jones, a 36-year-old Georgia state representative, said it’s exciting to elect a woman, but when it comes to Clinton being that women, she’s ambivalent. Of course the party out of power is going to have a dim view of the nation’s recent trajectory.
“I will not represent a party that commits election fraud”. Trump is running on change. Trump risks seeming too pessimistic with his message that nation is in dire straits.
Sanders’ supporters threatened a mass protest during Clinton’s remarks and while there were isolated protests and boos, much of the crowd was enthralled by her speech.
“The truth is, through all of these years of public service, the service part has always come easier to me than the public part”.
She acknowledged those concerns briefly, saying “I get it that some people just don’t know what to make of me”. When he’s gotten a tough question from a reporter. The solution, she argued, wasn’t rule by a would-be president who claims that “I alone can fix it” but concerted action and political compromise. She talked about him being baited by a tweet but was trying to bait him.
Clinton hopes to win over not only the hearts of Republican voters but also the wallets of some of the party’s donors. Her speech was an important chance to speak to liberals, especially, and convince them she is not a cold, calculating politician devoid of principles and beholden to special interests. Some of the polls released in the coming weeks should reveal whether she made any headway. Given the turbulence and terrorism across the globe, she said Americans are “looking for steady leadership”.
Donald Trump looked like an insane lunatic in Cleveland, while Hillary Clinton looked, sounded, and acted like a president as she accepted the Democratic nomination.
Clinton evoked her hawkish side Thursday night, with vows of “defeating ISIS” and allusions to USA drone strikes.
Clinton says: “When there are no ceilings, the sky’s the limit”.
CLINTON, on taxing the wealthy and corporations: “Because when more than 90 percent of the gains have gone to the top 1 percent, that’s where the money is”.
“Most of all, don’t believe anyone who says: “I alone can fix it”.
“A man you can bait with a tweet”, Clinton said, “is not a man you can trust with nuclear weapons”. In an election in which neither candidate is very well liked, having a strong team that can help drag you over the finish line could be critical. “Even non-African-Americans are afraid of Donald Trump, not just pro-Hillary people”.
The Democratic nominee wasn’t Bill Clinton.
The sprawling speech Clinton delivered Thursday evening achieved most of these objectives. Sanders drew roughly 8,000 to the Florida State Fair Grounds in March. The convention demonstrated she should have plenty. He praised her in a prime-time speech and even had the convention rules waived so he could give her his delegates, a symbolic gesture that allowed her to be nominated by unanimous consent. After her mother’s presidential bid she re-entered public life to hit the campaign trail, endearing herself to supporters with stories of Clinton as a mother and grandmother to her children, Charlotte, aged 2 come September, and Aidan, born in June. The fact remains that many younger voters and extremely liberal voters do not particularly like Clinton.
“Our country needs your ideas, energy and passion”, said Clinton, imploring those who backed Sanders to aid in rendering what many have hailed as the “most progressive” platform in the party’s 188 years.
The Trump campaign didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Sanders and liberal icons such as U.S. Sen.
