Timely Tigers spoil Pomeranz’s 2nd Red Sox start in 4-2 win

V-Mart was back at Fenway Park this week while the Detroit Tigers played a three-game series against the Red Sox, and the first baseman recalled fond memories of his time in Boston before Wednesday’s game.

Before Monday night, the Detroit Tigers were the lone team in the American League that the Boston Red Sox had not faced all season. I think Miggy hit it low enough and hard enough that he was able to cut it through the wind.

With a 2-1 lead, Fulmer got some defensive help from centerfielder Tyler Collins in the third to keep the Red Sox from tying the game. Detroit’s 1-through-4 batters – Ian Kinsler, Jose Iglesias, Cabrera, and Victor Martinez – went 8-for-12 against the lefty.

In a frustrating game for the Red Sox, the Tigers were victorious in the first matchup of the year, winning 4-2.

Tigers rookie starter Michael Fulmer gave up two runs on solo homers in the fifth and seventh innings and then couldn’t stave off a Boston rally to tie it in the eighth.

Justin Wilson was on the mound for the ninth for the save and got Bogaerts to strike out looking, David Ortiz to fly out to center and Jackie Bradley Jr.to fly out for the final out, the 4-3 loss and the Tigers handed the Red Sox their first sweep of the season. He allowed three earned runs on nine hits and issued three walks.

Alex Wilson (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless two-thirds of an inning. “He just caught up with it and drove it”.

Detroit threatened to break the game open in the top half of the third when the bases were juiced with only one out. Third base coach Brian Butterfield stopped Betts at third and Rondon struck out Pedroia to end the inning.

“I feel like our guys kept battling back”, Wright said. “I’m not as fast as I used to be, so it’s just a triple”.

So when Pomeranz – who allowed just one hit through the first three innings Monday night – allowed a leadoff single to Miguel Cabrera to start the fourth, there was uneasy sense of deja vu at Fenway.

McCann made it 3-1 in the sixth, hitting a drive that caromed off a billboard above the Green Monster seats. Zieger is still the best bet for save opportunities in Boston until Craig Kimbrel (knee) returns from the disabled list. Farrell said he’ll have a rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Pawtucket.

It’s been good pitching or good hitting, but never both for the Red Sox for almost a week now. Detroit OF Cameron Maybin remained out of the starting lineup because of a back injury. He is scheduled to undergo surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome.
