Mauer’s bases-loaded walk in 12th lifts Twins over White Sox
Michael Ynoa (1-0) walked the bases loaded three batters after Buxton’s pop out, but got Brian Dozier on a pop out to third.
The Chicago White Sox got mostly outstanding pitching on Friday night.
“He was able to come through”.
Perez, moved up to the No. 3 spot when Ryan Braun was scratched from the lineup with tightness in his right side, finished with three hits and three RBIs.
Navarro’s one-out double to the left field corner came off Twins reliever Fernando Abad. Tilson batted.282 with 34 RBIs and 15 stolen bases in 100 games for Triple-A Memphis.
“Gonzo’s been as consistent as anybody of getting us to a point where we can win a game”, Ventura said.
Cabrera lined a two-out, two-strike double into the gap in left-center to score Tim Anderson and Tyler Saladino to put Chicago up 3-1. He kept us in the game.
“The up and down has been insane”, Sox designated hitter Justin Morneau said of the Sox’s last week.
Adam Eaton led off the game with a home for the Sox, but Ricky Nolasco only allowed two more hits and one walk in eight innings.
“It’s a disappointing game, but it was entertaining”, Twins manager Paul Molitor said.
Dan Jennings (4-3) hit Eddie Rosario with a full-count pitch to lead off the 12th.
Chicago starter Jose Quintana allowed one run and seven hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. That would give James Shields two extra days rest with an off day Monday following his season-high 117-pitch outing against the Cubs Tuesday.
Morneau then barely missed hitting his second home run as a Sox, lining a single off the right field wall for his eighth hit 35 plate appearances for the Sox, and he’s still finding his way after bouncing back from offseason elbow surgery. After that, however, only one White Sox runner reached second base against Nolasco.
With Saturday’s home run, Morneau has homered against all 30 teams in the majors. Sale, who drew a five-day suspension for the incident, also said he had several 1-on-1 meetings, including one with Ventura.
The Twins (39-63) will face the White Sox again later tonight (Saturday). “I’ve got to do a better job of making my pitch with two outs there”.
Likewise, Sale called the meeting “good” and “very productive”.
But Melky Cabrera’s two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth kept the game alive for the White Sox. “He knew that he wasn’t going to be in there tomorrow”.
The Sox quickly announced Frazier was out with flu-like symptoms, but that didn’t end the weekend trade watch for a team that last week declared it was open to any deal by Monday’s trade deadline except for adding short-term rentals.
“(This) time of year, it’s rampant, everybody talking about people, and a lot of it can just be fans saying, ‘Trade this guy for that guy, ‘” Ventura said. Manager Robin Ventura said there’s “a good chance” that LHP Carlos Rodon (wrist) would return to the rotation on Sunday against the Twins.
