‘Jason Bourne’ wins with $60 million, ‘Bad Moms’ scores
Matt Damon returns to his most iconic role in Jason Bourne. The Matt Damon-led sequel has taken the top spot at the box office, raking in a healthy $60 million in its opening weekend, according to studio estimates. The film has grossed over 105.7 million dollars in 10 days of releasing. It’s also the second-biggest open of the franchise; Bourne Ultimatum debuted with $69.3 million. “The anticipation of seeing Matt Damon working again with [director] Paul Greengrass, the compelling collaboration that made the “Bourne” franchise, proved satisfying to people”. Jason Bourne had a total production budget of $120 million.
One possible reason more moviegoers didn’t feel the “Bourne” is that it didn’t have the appeal to both sexes that everyone assumed it did.
“Massively, this film was embraced by female audiences”, Dergarabedian says. “R-rated comedies usually get B grades, sometimes Cs”. That movie went on to gross $442.8 million worldwide, a figure Universal would be ecstatic for “Jason Bourne” to hit, as the movie has had mixed reviews with a 56% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
Jason Bourne may be back in a very big, blockbuster-y way, but it was Bad Moms that really surprised to the upside this weekend (and Nerve to a lesser degree), which means theaters are going to be extremely busy when Suicide Squad opens next weekend. The youthful thriller Nerve also did well, taking in $15.1m since launching on Wednesday. The much-awaited horror movie stars Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman and Maria Bello. Lights Out’s 50 percent drop marks a relatively light decline for the horror genre, bringing the film’s USA and Canada total to an impressive $42.9 million on a $4.9 million budget. The milestone “validates their decision to do the movie, irrespective of the controversy surrounding remaking what to some is a comedy classic”, Dergarabedian says.
Rounding out the top 10 were “Ice Age: Collision Course” with $10.5 million; “Ghostbusters” with $9.8 million; “Nerve” with $9 million; “Finding Dory” with $4.2 million; and “The Legend Of Tarzan” with $2.4 million.
