Niners’ Colin Kaepernick, Blaine Gabbert to split reps
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (7) and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert (2) look to pass during the first day of training camp at the San Francisco 49ers practice facility in Santa Clara, Calif., on Sunday, July 31, 2016. Instead it appears the answer has so far been: None of those things. “I think we’ve got 24 reps today with the ones”, Kelly said Sunday.
Highlights included a threaded pass over a defender to wide receiver DeAndrew White during 7 on 7 drills. He had 6.6 yards per attempt. Ian Williams, who started all 16 games last season, went on injured reserve Saturday because of a troublesomeankle. He rushed for five touchdowns in seven starts in 2012, but just six touchdowns in the three years since.
The 49ers roster has plenty of questions entering camp.
So does Kaepernick or Gabbert need to emerge as a bona fide starter to keep Baalke (or his potential successor) from seeking a new quarterback next year? There’s only so much you can do with QBs like these ones.
Yes, every high or low will be charted as long as Gabbert rotates first-team snaps with Colin Kaepernick. Making matters worse, Kaepernick’s inability to stay on a full weight training program while he was rehabilitating left him shedding pounds that he normally carries to stand up to the rigors of the NFL.
Kaepernick said he’s somewhat familiar with Kelly’s offense and is happy to be back on the field practicing. With both quarterbacks wanting to take the starting job, it will also be an easy job for coach Kelly as the right attitude would steer their team to their goals for the season. During organized team activities Gabbert took control of the offense and even showed signs of leadership while Kaepernick recovered from various ailments.
Kaepernick is cleared for the first time since last season to fully participate in practice, having been mostly limited to mental reps in the offseason.
“I never weighed myself when I was at my lightest because I didn’t want to know”, he said. “That’s the way the competition goes and you’ve just got to make the most of your opportunity”, Gabbert said.
“There’s always somebody that’s trying to take your job and if you’re not competing with yourself and with the other guys, I would say you’re plateauing and not getting any better”. Which quarterback can handle what they’re doing and get the team in the end zone? So, we’re excited to see it. Kelly added: “The great part about it is I think we’re confident in both those guys”. He noted that he does not want to make the wrong decision along the way.
