Clinton Speech a ‘Very Average Scream’
Thursday marked the end of two straight weeks of high-octane political conventions – topped off with Hillary Clinton accepting the Democratic nomination. She told Americans we cannot afford to elect Donald Trump as president, warning: “A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons”.
Ever the TV critic, Trump knows the Democratic Convention ratings have been higher than his, but gave his convention higher style points. “He’s offering empty promises”. She said she realizes that people often see a “caricature” of herself as a politician but that she hopes American voters will review her track record as a USA senator and secretary of State. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden went to bat for Clinton on Wednesday night, while her husband Bill, himself a former president, delivered the keynote speech on Tuesday and First Lady Michelle Obama spoke on Monday.
We’ll talk about the speech, and the divisions in the Democratic party with our panel.
Donald Trump Jr. claimed on social media that that a line from his speech to the Republican Convention – “that’s not the America I know” – was pinched by the US President. Tonight, we’ve reached a milestone in our nation’s march toward a more ideal union: the first time that a major party has nominated a woman for President.
Clinton also vowed to fight income inequality, offered an agenda for providing debt-free college, promised to introduce sensible gun control measures, and pledged to fight climate change – because she “believes in science”.
Clinton is playing up economic opportunity, diversity and national security.
Donald Trump is defending his criticism of the bereaved parents of a Muslim U.S. Army captain, taking to Twitter Sunday to say the father “viciously attacked” him in his speech at the Democratic National Convention.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that every election is important in its own way, but I can’t think of an election that was more important in my lifetime”, Clinton told thousands of supporters in a West Philadelphia arena. He said that as a veteran of many civil rights protests, he understands the passions that drove the mostly young delegates to shout over his speech.
Trump, she suggested, has divided society and seeks to lead unilaterally. “Will we stay true to that motto?”
Clinton didn’t miss a chance to go after her opponent.
“Because when any barrier falls in America, it clears the way for everyone”, Clinton said.
