Red Sox trade for Twins RP Fernando Abad
The Red Sox acquired a left-hander from the AL Central 0n Monday, but it wasn’t Chris Sale.
He is making $1.25 million this year.
The Boston Red Sox have made another move to bolster their ailing bullpen.
Abad, 30, is 1-4 this season with a 2.65 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 29 strikeouts in 34.0 innings pitched. Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports was first to report the deal.
This year, Abad has held hitters to a. 220 average and left-handed batters are batting. He has also made stops in Washington and Oakland.
Abad, who signed a one-year deal with Minnesota before the season, will be under the Red Sox’s control for the next two seasons and will be eligible for arbitration in 2017. Uehara, who assumed closing duties for Kimbrel, has been on the disabled list since July 20 with a right pectoral strain.
They are 8-8 over their last 16 games, and entering Monday only right-hander Brad Ziegler had an ERA under 3.00 among the healthy bodies in the bullpen. The team drafted the now 25 year-old back in 2009, but Light opted to go to Dartmouth instead.
Over two separate appearances with the Red Sox, Light allowed eight runs on seven hits and a walk in 2-2/3 innings.
