Padres’ Jackson has shaky first inning in 6-0 loss to Reds
Cincinnati Reds starter Homer Bailey brings a 5-0 record against the Padres into his first start of 2016 in Sunday’s series finale in San Diego.
The San Diego Padres began the month with some strong play at home and look to conclude it the same way, although they’ll be without Matt Kemp when they host the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday for the rubber match of their three-game set. The Reds are 3-1 on their six-game road trip and have won nine of their 13 contests since the All-Star break.TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), FSN San DiegoPITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Anthony DeSclafani (6-0, 3.09 ERA) vs. Padres LH Christian Friedrich (4-6, 5.00)DeSclafani remained flawless on the season by winning his fourth consecutive start Monday despite yielding five runs and six hits in five innings at San Francisco.
“Christian is fine when he hits his spots”, said Padres manager Andy Green.
Offensively, Bailey got all the support he needed on a two-run homer by Jose Peraza in the second inning and an infield RBI single by Tucker Barnhart that caromed off the foot of Padres reliever Jose Dominguez in the sixth.
“I don’t think it’s anything to the point where I have to miss time”, he said. The 28-year-old native of SC made a spot start at St. Louis on July 20, yielding three runs and four hits – two homers – in five innings of a loss. He has given up 22 home runs and a hefty 59 walks in 117 1/3 innings this year.
“I’m glad we ended it”, Finnegan said. Suarez notched a two-RBI single that scored Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips, both aboard via hits. Derek Norris then tapped out to pitcher Raisel Iglesias to send the game to extra innings.
The Padres had a chance to cut into their 4-0 deficit in the second inning when loading the bases with two outs.
Zack Cozart’s one-out double in the first started the Reds off. Rookie left fielder Alex Dickerson, who had homered in four straight games, collided with center fielder Travis Jankowski on Cozart’s drive into left-center and was forced to leave the game with a right hip contusion.
Reds: RHP Dan Straily (6-6, 3.84) will make his first career start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. With one more steal, Myers will become the ninth player in Padres’ history to have a 20-20 season. He limited the opposition to four base hits while striking out five.
