Officials Dismiss Trump’s Assertions About NFL and Debates
Donald Trump this weekend demanded new dates for this fall’s Presidential debates, accusing the bipartisan group that organized it of setting bad dates, and rigging the schedule to favor Democrats and Hillary Clinton.
Miller is right that the Democratic debates were scheduled for mysteriously low-profile times. “Well, I’ll tell you what I don’t like”.
So in reverse order, the idea that the National Football League sent Trump a letter complaining about the debate schedule will be pretty hard to prove unless he can produce such a document. But we’re not going to be having debates on Saturday and Sunday nights, I don’t believe.
“I’ll tell you what I don’t like”, Trump said in an interview with ABC News on Sunday.
Trump had previously done eleven of the twelve debates during the Republican Party presidential primary.
Trump hasn’t threatened a boycott. “I like three debates”, he said. “I’m not saying all special interests are bad interests, and I don’t think people who have to take money are necessarily bad”. The source could have been Paul Hicks, former NFL P.R. chief and father of Trump’s current P.R. chief, Hope Hicks.
The Commission announced the dates and sites of the debates in September 2015.
‘The CPD did not consult with any political parties or campaigns in making these decisions, ‘ the commission said in a statement issued Saturday. The NFL regular-season schedule, on the other hand, was released in April this year. But in 2016, there is plenty of opportunity to watch multiple things, to DVR a game or a debate, or to simply watch highlights that are repeated non-stop for the next several days.
On the other hand, it would seem to constitute a tremendous risk for Trump to opt for the unprecedented move of skipping out on general election debates.
Donald Trump’s campaign will begin a push this week to reschedule the presidential debates set for this fall, but the Commission on Presidential Debates, the nonpartisan group responsible for scheduling, is standing firm for now. Maybe like she did with Bernie Sanders, where they were on Saturday nights when nobody’s home. That leaves only Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which themselves may be affected by baseball’s World Series.
One complication was Yom Kippur on Tuesday, October 11 and Wednesday, October 12.
Trump’s tweet also brought up Bernie Sanders, saying “same as last time w/ Bernie”, a veiled reference to the Democratic primary debate calendar. “Naturally, we would prefer the Debates Commission would select a different night for the debates”.
The commission took an unusual step by defending itself in detail through its Sunday afternoon statement. Trump pointed out that both of those nights will conflict with National Football League games.
“Mr Trump has made it very clear as recently as Friday: he wants the debates”.
The major point of vulnerability for Donald Trump in this campaign is the danger of him being exposed as a shockingly uninformed candidate during the debates.
“Certainly, we’re not going to agree with anything that our nominee doesn’t agree with”, Mr. Priebus said on CBS’s “Face the Nation”.
