Brewers catcher Lucroy blocks trade to Indians
Sunday morning, d’Arnaud said he was not dwelling on the possibility he could be traded. “Whenever those things don’t line up, decisions have to be made that might be tough, but that’s the way it has to be”.
However, despite rekindling talks earlier this week, it was reported late Saturday that the Mets had not gotten much closer to Lucroy and it was becoming more likely he would get traded to the Indians (Crasnick, ESPN). Perhaps this will be like last year’s Carlos Gomez trade-that-wasn’t to the Mets, then trade-that-was to the Astros all over again. While Milwaukee GM David Stearns, publicly declared the deal dead Sunday, one industry source talking to the Brewers said he wouldn’t be surprised if they talked about it again Sunday. “It is why we engage with multiple teams throughout the entirety of the negotiation”. Jonathan elected to invoke the no-trade clause.
The Indians were desperate for help behind the plate with starting catcher Yan Gomes out for another month with a separated shoulder.
On the season, Lucroy is batting an impressive.
So far this season Jonathan Lucroy is batting 0.300 with 13 homers and 50 RBIs. He’s making $4.35 million this year and will earn $5.25 million next year if the Brewers (or potentially a team that trades for him) exercises the club-option in the final year of his deal.
Even with Lucroy blocking the efforts of the Brewer’s management, they will still welcome him on their roster. “As of right now, I’m still a Brewer, and I’m going to be until somebody tells me different”.
Rumors had already surfaced by the time Lucroy pinch-hit in the eighth inning that the Texas Rangers were back in the picture. He received a standing-ovation from the Miller Park crowd.
The Rangers did everything they needed to do at the trade deadline, and did it without surrendering their top prospect, Joey Gallo, or any of the young and exciting players who figure to make up their core for years to come.
