An all-time first for venerable AP Top 25
This week, the Associated Press released their All-Time Top 100 College Football Poll, in which they ranked the 100 most-succesful programs in college football history, according to the AP. Alabama is the highest-ranked team in the SEC at No. 4, preceded by Notre Dame (No. 3), Oklahoma and Ohio State (No. 1).
One point was awarded for each appearance in the poll over the years, two points for No. 1 rankings and 10 points for national championships.
The Sooners rank second in all-time weeks ranked No. 1 (101), trailing only Ohio State (105), and have spent more time in the AP top 5 than any other program with 393 appearances.
The AP has ranked football teams since 1936, which includes 1,103 polls and 44 different teams ranked in the No. 1 position.
Though no longer part of the formula that determines College Football’s primarily recognized national champion, the AP poll still awards its own national championship trophy as its done since the 30s.
The Tulane Green Wave earned the No. 70 ranking in the poll.
Fun Fact: The AP poll goes back 80 years, and in that period of time, there have been only three seasons when Ohio State was not ranked at least once – the fewest of any program.
Down the list, with 43 points, Colorado State tied with Santa Clara and Tulsa for 77th place.
