Yelich, Mathis lead Marlins to 11-0 win over Cardinals
The moral of the story is that when you hear elbow, you should start paying attention again to what happens on the trade front; if Miami’s front office feels this is serious, they might just be motivated to try to land another arm before the Deadline.
Hechavarria atoned with his two-out single that preceded Dietrich’s winning hit. He struck out two. “It was the first time I’ve worked with him”.
“It just boils down to making pitches for me – just stay down in the zone and let the defense work”. “He missed in the middle of the plate a lot, obviously, against a good offensive club, and it was a rough day”.
Diaz is batting.312 with 14 home runs.
Marlins: RHP Colin Rea, acquired with Cashner in the trade, said he’ll undergo further tests on his sprained elbow to determine the extent of the injury. The Marlins won 5-4.
Rookie Tyrell Jenkins allowed an unearned run in six innings and picked up his first major league win in Atlanta’s win over Philadelphia. “We don’t know anything yet”.
Rea said he felt some tightness while warming up but thought he could pitch through it.
“I can’t say I haven’t walked around with my shirt off before”, Dietrich said. He appeared on no top-100 prospect lists and only a handful of organizational top-10 lists entering the 2016 season despite hitting.380/.448/.620 in AAA Memphis at the end of 2015 and putting on a show in the Arizona Fall League with four home runs in 20 games while hitting.315/.370/.616.
Miami scored three runs in the first inning with Marcell Ozuna bringing home two on a double. They drew even with the Cardinals at 56-48 for the second NL wild-card spot.
“Just that it wasn’t coming out quite as hard as it was in the first and second innings”, Mathis said. “We’ve lost a couple of important games for us but there’s nothing we can do about it now”, he said.
After Rodney failed to cover first base in time in for what could’ve been an inning-ending double play, he allowed an RBI double to Stephen Piscotty, scoring Pham. Suzuki went 2-for-17 during the homestand and will now look for No. 3,000 on the road.
His new teammate Andrew Cashner, however, wasn’t buying it: “I think he was excited to get his shirt ripped off”.
Tommy Pham had an RBI single and a two-run homer to help lead St. Louis to victory.
Carlos Martinez hit Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton in the bottom of the first.
Miami added three runs in the sixth.
“I kind of thought they hit (Giancarlo) on goal”, Cashner said.
In other Cardinals news, Jhonny Peralta and Matt Carpenter both began rehab assignments on Sunday.
“That ball has got to be caught”, he said. “He seems to be OK.”.
“Martin has been locked in all year but now all of a sudden, he’s kind of showing some power”, Mattingly said.
Cardinals: RHP Adam Wainwright (9-5, 4.16) is scheduled to start Tuesday at Cincinnati against Dan Straily (6-6, 3.84).
Cashner and Martinez disagreed on the issue of whether the Stanton hit-by-pitch was intentional.
