Clinton campaign ‘hacked’ along with other Democratic organisations
The Clinton campaign, based in Brooklyn, released a statement on the matter late Friday, acknowledging that the breach was part of the broader DNC hack.
However, it did not contain any sensitive information like social security numbers or credit card numbers.
The national security division of the Department of Justice is looking into whether cyber attacks on Democratic political organisations threatened USA security, according to U.S. media.
In recent weeks, hackers gained access to the DCCC’s entire network.
The hacks on the Clinton campaign were reported the same day as a hack on the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the campaign arm of House Democrats.
US Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign says its databases have been infiltrated by hackers during a recent attack on the Democratic Party and its various organizations.
Merrill further explained that the private investigators believe it is similar to the Democratic National Committee hack, but federal investigators are still working to determine the scope and nature of the intrusion.
“It wouldn’t surprise me” that the Clinton campaign was hacked, California Sen.
News of the latest hack followed a report Friday by Yahoo News that the Federal Bureau of Investigation warned the Clinton campaign in March that it was the target of a cyberattack, but the agency was spurned as it tried to investigate. A source familiar with the matter confirmed this account to Reuters.
The previously unreported hack of the DCCC is likely to have been aimed at gathering information on donors rather than steal funds, four sources told Reuters. But the Kremlin denied involvement in the DCCC cyber-attack.
In fact, as more of the cyber-security sector and the media’s efforts concentrated on the original DNC hack, the more it became apparent its ties to Russian Federation.
The Obama administration announced in an April 2015 executive order that it could apply economic sanctions in response to cyber attacks.
The leak led to the resignation of the party’s chairperson Debbie Wasserman Schulz and sparked protests at the convention in Philadelphia.
Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook said the breach attack was performed by “Russian state actors” as a way to help GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump. Democrats accused him of trying to get a foreign adversary to conduct espionage that could affect this November’s elections, but Trump later said he was merely being sarcastic.
The campaign did not specify what types of data the service was analyzing, but partnerships with modern e-commerce companies can allow sophisticated tracking, categorization and identification of website visitors.
Meredith Kelly, a spokeswoman for the congressional committee, said that the DCC “immediately took action” after the hack was discovered and brought in a forensic investigator to address the incident, The New York Times reported. Officials at the DNC did not respond to requests for comment.
The digital intrusion is overshadowing Clinton’s first day back on the campaign trail.
