Apple Subs Squirt Gun for Controversial Pistol Emoji

In efforts to curb violence, Apple is replacing its pistol emoji with a lime green water gun. San Francisco will see its first EmojiCon, a conference to celebrate and dissect all things emoji, from Novemer 4-6.

In a case that advanced to court, a Brooklyn teenager created a Facebook post in January 2015 that included an emoji of a police officer followed by several gun emojis that were pointing at the officer’s head.
The sneak peak of the emojis released by Apple today comes following Google’s proposal which was approved by the Unicode Consortium in mid July.
Gun-control advocates had urged Apple to dump the handgun emoji. And it’s not just women who will benefit, Apple are introducing a male option for the haircut and scalp massage emoji.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based tech giant has spoken out against gun emoji in the past. Burge said. “Some emojis are unusual, perhaps inappropriate, but they are there for legacy reasons”.
An Apple spokesperson did not respond to request for further comment. Changing the emoji to a different non-lethal gun won’t change much.
However, many people on Twitter have joked that switching a gun for a toy isn’t “going to solve anything”.
