Anandiben submits resignation, new CM to be announced on Friday
Gujarat’s first woman Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on Wednesday submitted her resignation to Governor O P Kohli. The meeting of the Parliamentary Board, which was chaired by Shah and attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, appointed Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and BJP general secretary Saroj Pandey as party’s central observers to hold consultations with the MLAs for electing the new leader.
In a short official meeting, Anandiben handed over her resignation letter to the governor who asked her to continue as the caretaker chief minister till her successor takes over the reins of the state.
The BJP parliamentary board decided that there is no question of the BJP chief going back to Gujarat – and he will, in fact, pick the next chief minister.
Earlier, her resignation was accepted by the BJP Parliamentary Board.
Interestingly, state unit BJP chief Vijay Rupani whose name is in the reckoning for the post besides others, virtually ruled himself out of the race, saying he would like to work for the party organisation.

The decision on the next chief minister will be taken after party leaders hold consultations with the state’s MLAs. Ruling out the candidature of Shah, also an MLA, Naidu said the party needs him to lead it at the national level. He is the party President will remain party President. Those close to the developments told Mirror that Anandiben Patel has strongly conveyed that once she steps down, the CM’s post should not go to either Shah or Rupani. On Friday, the legislature party will meet to elect a new leader, who will then set the ball rolling to be sworn in as the next CM. However, he will attend the meeting of the legislature party meeting. Rupani is among the names doing the rounds as Anandiben’s likely successor.
He, however, said that Shah would be present in the meeting of legislature party to be held in Gujarat on Thursday to decide the next chief minister.
