Debate Commission Fires Back After Trump Criticizes Schedule
What Trump left out of his tweet was that Commission on Presidential Debates, a non-partisan organization who has sponsored the debates since 1998, scheduled the dates a year in advance.
Miller was asked directly by “Reliable Sources” host Brian Stelter whether Trump would seek to change the schedule in negotiations about the debates with the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Commission on Presidential Debates.
“We would like the debates to not be head-to-head against major National Football League games”.
In an interview with ABC’s This Week on Saturday, Trump said that the National Football League had voiced its disappointment about the conflicting prime time slots in a letter he had received.
Some critics have suggested that Trump’s complaints may hint that he’ll try to skip the debates. Trump is already losing to support to former Gov. Johnson, and if he fails to show up at the debate, Trump will only give the Libertarian revolt against the GOP a national platform.
Trump hasn’t threatened a boycott.
Trump expanded his conspiracy theory when asked about the debates during an interview for Sunday’s “This Week” on ABC: “Well, I’ll tell you what I don’t like”. And it’s been a hot topic, I think, in our party for a long time.
It occurs to me that very few folks watch anything on network television at the time it is actually broadcast.
“The CPD did not consult with any political parties or campaigns in making these decisions”, the commission said in a statement issued Saturday.
At a Sunday campaign event in Columbus, Ohio, Clinton reiterated that the debates were prearranged last fall by a “non-partisan, independent commission” before either party had its nominee. The group seeks to space out the debates and schedule them for different nights of the week.
On Sept. 23, 2015, the CPD announced the dates of all three presidential debates: Monday, Sept. 26; Sunday, Oct. 9; and Wednesday, Oct. 19.
The one vice presidential debate is on October 4 at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, the home state of Clinton’s running mate, Sen.
PRIEBUS: Well, I think it’s – I don’t understand why we would have Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump debating each other, which is of interest to the entire country – I mean, let’s face it, this is an election like none we have ever seen. Scheduling the debates on a Sunday or Monday night in the fall is just a bad idea. The commission has already ruled out Saturdays and Fridays because TV viewing is lower on those days. That leaves only Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which themselves may be affected by baseball’s World Series.
Donald Trump believes Hillary Clinton has rigged the 2016 presidential debates.
Moreover, the Commission on Presidential Debates has released a report saying that they already started working more than 18 months ago.
Spicer acknowledged that the dates were set last September, before the primaries even began, but said that “doesn’t mean it’s a good system”.
