Tigers deal Price to Toronto
The Tigers are getting three lefties: Norris, Matt Boyd, and Jairo Labourt.
It didn’t matter that the price was three prospects, including the top one in the organization, or that Price is a free agent after the season. Toronto is seven games back of the Yankees in the AL East – they still have 13 head-to-head games remaining – but only two games back of the second wildcard spot. Though Tulowitzki is under contract through 2020, Price is an impending free agent and there is no telling if Toronto will be able to keep him when he hits the market this winter. Between AA and AAA, he’s 9-2 with a 1.68 ERA, 0.843 WHIP, and a 4.46 SO/W ratio. He’s recorded 138 strikeouts in 146 innings and has held opposing hitters to a. 241 batting average.
Since his first full season in the big leagues, in 2010, Price has rated third in the majors among all starters in terms of fWAR, fourth in innings. Norris has made five starts in the majors this season with a 1-1 record top go with an ERA of 3.86.
“Just like I’m a believer that the opposite can happen when you don’t make a move, you can often see teams kind of tank – I think we were victim of that last year as a matter of fact”, Dickey said. The Blue Jays will pay the rest of Price’s salary.
Speaking in the Detroit clubhouse before the Tigers faced the Orioles in Baltimore, Price was excited about joining a contender – even if he did refer to the Blue Jays as “they” instead of “we”. Labourt is 2-7 with a 4.59 ERA at Class A Dundedin.
It came last night in the form of All-Star left-handed pitcher David Price, who Toronto acquired in a trade from the Detroit Tigers.
And for the Tigers it means an influx of pitching prospects, including one who already has surfaced in the big leagues and has a chance to be a top-flight starter in the future. The left-hander was not thought to be on the block until yesterday, when the Tigers decided it was time to sell, and drew strong interest from the Yankees, Giants and Dodgers before being traded to Toronto. There’s nothing to suggest Price won’t pitch well in Toronto in the last couple of months before he inevitably signs a megadeal in free-agency this offseason. This trade is a bad thing for the Tribe, because Detroit was set to have a really old roster in another year or two, with very little talent in its farm system to upgrade with.
