Wyoming records first West Nile case of the year
Mosquito control officials said dead birds are an indication that West Nile virus is in the area. According to Kreidler, August is generally the time of year the WF-WCPHD begins to see West Nile Virus in the community, but recent weather conditions have not been ideal for large breeding.
Personal protection measures are recommended during outdoor activities and includes; wearing shoes and socks, long trousers and long-sleeved shirts. The virus has also been detected in mosquito samples trapped in MA and CT.
“The positive mosquito pool is a species that can bite both birds and humans”.
Coloradans, especially those most susceptible to the harmful effects of Zika virus, must take seriously cautions against travel to affected areas and exposure via sexual contact to those who might carry the virus. Last year was also the deadliest year ever in San Diego for West Nile virus, with six deaths among the 44 human cases reported.
The update comes one day after the county announced a 22nd confirmed case of Zika.
The pool was collected in a Mentor trap on July 22. There are 1,647 travel-related cases in the continental US and 20 cases in USA territories.
There are no medications to treat or vaccines to prevent West Nile virus infection.
Deet: use insect repellent while outdoors at all times to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes and other insects.
Make sure there are screens on home windows and doors, and to fix any rips tears or holes. All standing water should be removed where available and permanent, or semi-permanent, water sources should be treated with “Mosquito Bits” and “Mosquito Dunks”.
