The man suspected of murdering an American woman in a stabbing rampage in central London has been named locally as Zakaria Bulhan. He was later formally arrested on suspicion of murder. Scotland Yard is in contact with the relevant embassies, he added.
Five others were injured in the attack in Russell Square. The series of attacks killed 52 people.
Hours before the stabbings, police announced that the first of an additional 600 armed officers were trained and ready to hit the streets.
Mayor Sadiq Khan said police were seeking “to establish the full facts including motives” for the attack and urged the city’s residents to stay calm but alert.
