Germany vs. South Korea in men’s soccer at Rio Olympics
Germany have a stacked squad (though not almost as strong as it could be as is the strength in depth of their young players), including Sven and Lars Bender and Arsenal’s winger Serge Gnabry who was especially unsafe off the bench in their 2-2 draw with Mexico on Thursday.
Germany are third in the table on two points, below South Korea and Mexico, who both have four points.
Fiji benefited from New Zealand s disqualification for fielding an ineligible player to qualify for the Olympics via previous year s Pacific Games and were duly thrashed 8-0 by South Korea on their debut on Thursday.
Gnabry now has three goals in the competition as he also cancelled out Hwang Hee-Chan s first-half opener.
South Korea will be able to advance to the quarterfinal with a draw with Mexico, which it will play against at Mane Garrincha Stadium in Brasilia on Wednesday.
Davie Selke put Germany on top in the 55th minute, but once again, the leading team couldn’t stay in front. Mexico defeated Fiji 5-1 for their first win earlier Sunday.
The Germans tied the score just eight minutes later, with Gnabry freezing goalkeeper Kim Dong-jun with his right-foot strike.
Fiji held a shock half-time lead thanks to Roy Krishna’s header.
The Arsenal forward scored in his side’s opening win against Mexico, and he strode toward South Korea’s box before wrapping a handsome shot across goal and inside the far post.
In Group D, Portugal continued their 100% start with a 2-1 win over Honduras in Rio. Korea lead the game by scoring the first goal in the first round, but Germany soon after caught up with the score and then it was back-to-back goal after another between two nations.
They beat Argentina 2-0 in their opening game.
