Vigils held for Washington shooting victims
Three young adults were fatally shot and killed, and a fourth was injured early Saturday, July 30 at an upscale neighborhood in Mukilteo, Washington, a waterfront town of about 20,000 people, 25 miles north of Seattle.
Susan Gemmer told The Associated Press that her 18-year-old granddaughter, Alexis Gemmer, hid in a closet to escape the gunman.
As the Washington Post reports, the gunman apparently shot and killed two people who were standing around a fire pit and then proceeded to fire shots at the roof of the house.
According to Gemmer’s granddaughter, the shooter arrived with a rifle at the party of 15 to 20 friends of Kamiak High School, mostly recent graduates ages 15 to 20. And they reportedly knew the gunman, who had broken up last week with one of the victims.
Travis declined to release more information, including the names of the victims.
Following the shooting at the Seattle-area home, State Troopers pulled over the 19-year-old suspect, who was said to be fleeing area.
A hot air balloon carrying 16 people caught on fire and crashed in Central Texas, and it appeared no one survived, authorities said. The two had met in high school and continued their relationship while attending the University of Washington-Bothell.
Several hundred friends and schoolmates gathered outdoors Saturday night at Kamiak High School in Mukilteo, from where Ivanoff and Bui graduated.
Mukilteo Police Department Officer Myron Travis says there’s no reason to believe there are other suspects. As they rolled under the garage door and the boy bolted across the street, the gunman began shooting at him from the roof, her granddaughter told Gemmer. Officers pulled the suspect over for speeding on southbound Interstate 5 in a 2016 Subaru WRX, and transported him back to Snohomish County.
While it was once a place where he says memories were made, it will now hold ones many wish they could now forget.
The shooting happened in the Chennault neighborhood, not far from the Boeing airfield between Seattle and Everett.
