Lincecum designated for assignment by Angels

James Paxton had maybe the best start of his young career Sunday. He was with the Mariners from 1989 to 1999 – winning American League MVP honors in 1997 – and returned to play his final two campaigns (2009-10). Paxton was forced to exit Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Angels prematurely after being struck by a come-backer off the bat of shortstop Andrelton Simmons. Shortly after the Mariners announced that the initial x-rays were negative, Paxton was day-to-day with a left elbow contusion and that he would be re-evaluated Monday.

“Confidence has gotten into him”, Seattle manager Scott Servais said of O’Malley.

With Joe Smith having been traded and Huston Street on the disabled list, the Angels have been searching for pitchers to fill roles setting up Cam Bedrosian, the presumptive closer. Talking to him after the eighth inning, he felt great and wanted to go back out there.

The 32-year-old started his Angels career in impressive fashion June 18, going six innings against the Oakland Athletics while allowing just one run on four hits.

Trout tacked on a triple in the third, and the Angels had their six runs by the fourth inning.

“Obviously, there was nerves”, said Freeman, who did not yet have a nameplate above his locker. “He believes he’s a big league player and I think you’re seeing it in front of our eyes”.

The Angels’ bullpen gave up one hit but was charged with four of the runs, with Valdez (0-1) taking the loss in his Angels debut. Kole Calhoun followed by driving a first-pitch fastball into the left-center gap for a double that moved Escobar to third.

Trout, celebrating his 25th birthday, struck out four times for the fourth time in his career. It came against Paxton on September 17, 2014.

“I can’t pick his stuff up”.

It marked the second consecutive start in which Paxton pitched eight or more innings while allowing one run. The Mariners are 3-8 in their last 11 during game 3 of a series and 1-4 in Paxtons last 5 starts.
