Envoy says Rouhani-Putin meeting will open new chapter in ties
Russia and Azerbaijan can find solutions to problems stemming from decreasing trade cooperation which has been hit by crises in the global economy and falling oil prices, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on August 8, reports TASS.
Azeri President Ilham Aliyev has offered to help finance the so-called North-South transportation corridor, which he touted as a project of “great importance” in connecting Europe and Asia.
The Kremlin also says the summit will focus on the transport corridor, particularly construction of a railroad between Iran and Azerbaijan.
“Iran is negotiating with the Eurasian Economic Union on custom tariffs, and is interested in reaching similar agreements with Azerbaijan in this regard as well”, he said. Leaders of Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia are meeting to.
He underlined cooperation in the banking sector, saying that “We try to enhance banking ties to a level which lead to the development of mutual trade and economic relations in all fields”. “I thank you [President Putin] for you personal active participation in the process”, Aliyev said at the meeting with Putin.
On Aug. 10, Armenian President Serge Sarkisian will conduct a work visit to Russian Federation to meet with Putin.
Masoumeh Ebtekar who is among President Rouhani’s entourage in his Baku visit, met on Monday with Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Republic of Azerbaijan Huseingulu Bagirov.
Their talks are expected to give a new push to the construction of a new worldwide transport corridor running between Russian Federation and India. The project, which has been discussed since 2008, is expected to get a major push after the three countries’ presidents discussed it for the first time, he said.
