New Star Trek TV show will have openly gay character
The reason, according to showrunner Bryan Fuller, is to allow the series to explore new storytelling avenues from a different viewpoint than Trek audiences expect. The lead character will be human, but she will not be a captain. “And we have a character who’s on a journey, and in order to understand something that is alien, she first has to understand herself”, Bryan Fuller said. Hannibal was, and we got away with murder. It’s about who’s the best actor, what can we say about diversity in every role.
Fuller also revealed that the main character is a Lt. Commander, because he wanted to capture the viewpoint of a lead who wasn’t sitting in the captain’s chair.
Production on Star Trek: Discovery will begin in Toronto in September. Fuller says the show is set in the “Prime” Trek timeline-not the “Kelvin” timeline established by JJ Abrams’ rebooted film franchise in 2009-and will deal with an event referenced but not fully explored in past Trek fiction. ‘We’ve come a long way since [the last Star Trek series]. Fuller was asked whether this meant that younger versions of some classic characters might make an appearance in the new show.
Following a Comic-Con panel in July, Fuller shared tidbits about the 13-episode series’ setting, character and innovations at a Television Critics Association meeting Wednesday.
“We’ll be looking in the second season to familiar characters and how they could feed into the weave, but first and foremost, we want to establish the greatness of the characters that we have come up with”, he said.
Those original series will feature advertisements, DeBevoise said, but “the commercial load is a limited commercial load”.
The show will be set 10 years before the original series featuring Captain Kirk and will bridge the gap between 2005 series Enterprise and the Kirk years.
Bryan Fuller has said that Star Trek: Discovery will focus on a female Lieutenant Commander, rather than the Discovery’s captain and that numerous crew will be aliens.
– Spock’s mother, Amanda Grayson, may be featured in “Discovery” but will not be a central figure.
“I’m delighted that there’s a gay character”, he told The Hollywood Reporter.
“Discovery” will premiere its first episode on CBS, but subsequent episodes will be streamed on pay services CBS All Access.
“They’ll probably be slightly more graphic content”, he said.
