Swansea breaks its transfer record to sign Borja Baston
Swansea City have completed the signing of former Eibar striker Borja Baston from Atletico Madrid for a club-record €18m, subject to worldwide clearance.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is targeting a world-class striker, with Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann his main targets, according to The Sun.
The 23-year-old striker became Swansea’s record signing when he completed his move to the Liberty Stadium earlier today in a deal worth £15.5m.
“Borja, who has been capped for Spain at Under-16, U17 and U19 level, could be available for the Swans’ opening Premier League fixture at Burnley on Saturday”.
‘The time is for him, the future is in his hands because he is a talented player. He is here to help us improve week after week, and for him to have the possibility to play.
“I’ve spoken to him already and I feel we can work very well together, ” said Borja. “I hope to do the same for Swansea”, said Borja.
On his the club’s remaining shopping plans, the Italian added: “There is money but I am happy with the group”.
Borja arrives at the Liberty Stadium just five days after Spanish World Cup victor Fernando Llorente joined the Swans from Sevilla.
“I am just pleased to be here”.
“It is great for me to have Spanish players in the team, but I want to learn English as quickly as possible to integrate into the team and get to know my team-mates”.
Guidolin stressed Swansea will need to recruit another defender to replace Williams.
Swansea manager Francesco Guidolin is confident Borja Baston will justify his record fee and prove to represent good value for money.
While the sales of Alberto Paloschi and Bafetimbi Gomis meant Guidolin had to go into the market for strikers, Swansea’s goals mainly came from midfield in the Premier League last term, with Andre Ayew and Gylfi Sigurdsson combining for 23 of the club’s 46 goals. “Hopefully I can score a lot”. This is important but this is not the most important things.
“I want to say something about Ash”.
‘I’ve spoken about the club’s past, the Vetch, this fantastic adventure, and Ashley is a very important part of this history.
