Women’s gymnastics all-around wraps up in Rio
That this was expected makes it no less remarkable.
Simone Biles won the Olympic Games all-around gold medal Thursday, extending the USA hold on one of the most prestigious prizes in women’s sports to a fourth Olympics.
Biles helped the Final Five to team gold here on Tuesday.
Biles herself has won the past three all-around competitions at the world championships.
Biles’ triumph made her the fourth successive American to win the title – following the successes of Carly Patterson, Nastia Liukin and Gabby Douglas – which is the longest winning streak by a country in the Olympic discipline.
As she has throughout that run, Biles stayed far ahead of the field by performing the most hard gymnastics with some of the best execution. She opened with a 15.866 on the vault and closed with a near flawless floor routine.
Raisman, a 22-year-old MA native who missed a bronze medal in the individual all-around in 2012 by a tiebreaker, now has five Olympic medals to her name.
The bronze medal went to Russia’s Aliya Mustafina, who posted an overall score of 58.665.
