PIttsburgh Steelers sign general manager Kevin Colbert to 2-year extension
The Pittsburgh Steelers are confident that their current head coach, Mike Tomlin can lead them all the way to the Promised Land again giving him a two-year contract extension. Steelers’ President Art Rooney released a statement saying, “I am pleased to announce we have extended Mike Tomlin’s contract through the 2018 season”. He has also guided the Black and Gold to four AFC North titles, a total of five playoff appearances and trips to Super Bowls 43 and 45. He served as the team’s director of football operations for 11 years before he was named GM in 2011. Tomlin is 82-46 with Pittsburgh since replacing Bill Cowher following the 2006 season.
47 regular season home victories during that span are the fourth-most in the NFL. NFL.com noted that the team has only had a total of three head coaches including Tomlin, since 1969.
In Tomlin’s eight years as coach the Steelers have never had a losing season, according to Penn Live.
Unlike other coach-executive relationships, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and G.M. Kevin Colbert have figured out how to stay on the same page. He is the sixth longest serving coach in the league.
Though the team did not disclose financial terms, this deal could place Tomlin among the league’s highest-paid coaches based on his tenure and accomplishments, including the cachet of Tomlin’s two Super Bowl berths and his guidance of a 2015 team expected to contend.
Colbert is entering his fifth season as the Steelers’ general manager and his 16th season overall in Pittsburgh’s front office.
Just like quarterback, finiding a good head coach in the NFL can be tough, and now the Steelers have locked up their head coach just months after signing their star quarterback, and face of the franchise, Ben Roethilisberger, to a five-year extension.
In 15 seasons under Colbert, the Steelers finished below.
