Olympics-Shooting-Fourth time lucky for Germany’s Engleder in three positions
The 33-year-old Engleder ranked at or near the top through the kneeling, prone and standing positions of the competition for a total score of 458.6, finishing just 0.2 of a point ahead of first-time Olympian Zhang Binbin of China, who mounted a late surge.
Also making history in Rio is USA cyclist Kristin Armstrong, who briefly retired after the London Games but is celebrating her 43rd birthday today one gold medal richer after winning her third straight Olympic time trial. Each and every day my team around me, my family, sacrificed so much for me to be here.
Engleder built enough cushion to overcome an average final shot to capture gold in women’s 3-position rifle Thursday at the Rio de Janeiro Games, the final Olympics for two of shooting’s most decorated shooters.
“I will shoot in the World Cup final and then I quit”, Engleder said. “I am nearly 34 and my son needs a steady life and my life is not steady”.
Laurie Hernandez, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and Madison Kocian were all phenomenal, but it was the incomparable Simone Biles who led the way as she claimed the first of a potentially record-breaking five gold medals at Rio 2016.
When Engleder realized she had won, she dropped down to her knees and screamed with excitement to the crowd. Asked what she’ll be doing next, Engleder responded: “Drinking a beer”. She missed her mark by firing an 8.6 to miss out on the chance for gold, earning her second bronze medal of Rio, as she placed in 10m air rifle as well.
“At first I couldn’t believe it and secondly I didn’t know if I should sing”, she said.
Behind Team USA was China with 13 medals, Japan with 10 medals and Russian Federation with 10 medals.
