American gymnast Simone Biles takes all-around Olympic gold in Rio
Two days after the Final Five gymnastics team won gold, Barack and Michelle Obama discussed their favorite Olympic sports and moments in a video for USA Today. A three-time Olympic medalist in London, Raisman appeared to be on the outside of the picture looking in after a shaky performance at the world championships that left her “devastated”. Starting in 2020 in Tokyo, each team will have four members.
Gymnastics are scored by two panels: one that adds points to 0 throughout the routine, focusing on points for good connections (two high-level skills that are performed in sequence without pause) and the routine’s overall difficulty. Here’s a look at Biles’s dominance since turning pro in 2013. Could Simone Biles fall and still win the Olympic All-Around? .
Biles, Raisman and the rest of the women’s team won the team gold medal Tuesday, giving Team USA back-to-back Olympic golds.
Biles became the fourth straight American woman to win the all-around title and fifth overall while cementing her reputation as the best of her generation and perhaps ever. Since her scores are consistently much higher than the second place athlete, she could conceivably take a tumble or even not quite stick her landing and still take the gold medal.
“No one goes in thinking they can beat Simone”.
Teammate Aly Raisman, also with a very strong floor routine, clinched silver. Here’s how she stacked up versus the second-best scores. She blew kisses to the crowd after her floor exercise, overcome by a comeback that at times seemed in doubt. “And if I could flip like that, I would do it in a heartbeat”, she said. While US men hung on gamely and failed to earn a medal in their team event, the women, led by Biles, completely crushed everyone else and earned the gold there.
Raisman, the veteran of the group, is nicknamed “Grandma” by teammates Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, and Madison Kocian.
