A look at Hostess’ new “Deep Fried Twinkies”
In this Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016, photo, Associated Press reporter Anne D’Innocenzio arranges frozen, deep-fried Twinkies on a tray before baking in NY.
To compare to other treats of choice, a chocolate frosted donut has 290 calories, an Oreo Blizzard from Dairy Queen is 384 calories and the average State Fair corn dog is 375 calories.
According to The Associated Press, the traditional cream-filled Twinkie is coated with a cake funnel batter, frozen and packaged. The Twinkies are immediately frozen and packaged. Consumers will need to finish preparation at home. They’ll be partially cooked, frozen and ready for reheating in a frying pan or oven.
A box of seven will cost $4.76 and, for the first three months, will only be available at Walmart stores. For comparison, New York-based hot-dog joint Papaya King sells its own fresh deep-fried treats for $3 each, excluding tax.
The treats arrived at select stores Thursday, and they will arrive nationwide Tuesday.
Deep fried Twinkies are no longer just for the State Fair.
The estimated nutrition content of a single Deep Fried Twinkie (220 calories, 9 grams of fat) is almost equal to a two-pack of regular Twinkies (270 calories, 9 grams of fat). The vanilla flavor of the Deep Fried Twinkies has nine grams of fat and 220 calories while a regular Twinkie has four grams of fat and 130 calories.
WORKING IT OFF: A person who weighs about 150 pounds would need to run for 20 minutes at 10 miles per hour, take a 40-minute spin class or do a 50-minute bike ride, says Amy Gorin, a Jersey City, New Jersey-based registered dietitian-nutritionist.
