Reds send RH Mike Leake to Giants for 2 prospects
The Red Sox have also been reluctant to say that their young talent are open to the trade market, so what suggests that they will make a deal like this now?
The deal came six days after Cincinnati dealt ace Johnny Cueto to Kansas City for three minor league pitchers. Jocketty may not be done.
If reports are true, there are other teams interested in bringing in the Reds’ pitcher, making Smith’s idea a very plausible possibility.
Starting pitching had been a need for the Giants heading into the trade deadline, despite the team already having to juggle a number of pitchers in and out of their rotation in recent weeks.
With Homer Bailey out for the season, the Reds will now likely have to dip back into the minor leagues for another starter.
The Giants are reportedly acquiring Mike Leake from the Cincinnati Reds, according to Jon Heyman of CBS As we learned from the Mets on Wednesdays, these things are always PENDING PHYSICALS and such, but it sounds like the Giants have help for their rotation. Mella-who will turn 22 on August 2-broke out notably in 2014, when he made 18 starts and posted a strikeout rate of 8.8 per nine and an impressive 2.0 BB/9 walk rate.
Ironically, Duvall homered off Leake in his Major League debut last season. He is 9-5 with a 3.56 ERA this season and should bolster the rotation of the defending World Series champions. Leake went eight scoreless innings and allowed just four hits, before ceding to Chapman in the ninth. His strikeouts/9 ratio was a career-best 6.9. This season, Finnegan was 3-0 with a 2.96 ERA in 14 relief appearances for the Royals. Entering Thursday’s games, he led the Pacific Coast League in home runs and total bases (218) while ranking among the league leaders in RBI (2nd) and extra-base hits (53, 2nd).
A Louisville native, Duvall was an 11th round pick by the Giants in the 2010 draft after his senior year at U of L. He was rated the team’s No. 25 prospect by MLBPipeline.com.
Mella was born in Banao, Dominican Republic, and has been in the Giants system since 2011 when he signed as an undrafted free agent at the age of 18. He’s also a perennial Gold Glove candidate and his hitting prowess will give even Madison Bumgarner a run for his money.
While Huddy is essentially out of options, Leake’s presence could be effective in lighting a fire under Matt Cain and Jake Peavy, who are now one notch lower in the pecking order (if you’re going purely off 2015 production).
