Rams break preseason attendance record against Cowboys
Benny Cunningham scored on a 14-yard run with 1:33 left in the first quarter for the Rams’ first points in the stadium where they first played in 1946 after moving from Cleveland until moving to Anaheim at the end of the 1979 season.
“Prescott”s start was delayed by receiver Lucky Whitehead”s electrifying 101-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the game.
Not knowing they would land a projected first round talent in LSU offensive tackle La’el Collins following last year’s draft as a free agent, the Cowboys likely would have addressed another area on their roster with Green’s pick if they could have gone back in time.
The Rams were warmly welcomed back to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Saturday with a record 89,140 fans in attendance: the largest crowd to ever watch a preseason football game in NFL history.
The coaches can not control if their players get injured during the game, whether it is the preseason or regular season. “It was like they clinched the playoffs, as far as they were concerned”.
The underwhelming effort came at an awkward time, shortly after a published report said the Rams likely would extend the contracts of Fisher and general manager Les Snead before the season. He had a quarterback rating of 154.5 to lead the Cowboys to a 24-7 halftime lead.
On August 20th, the Rams will take on the Kansas City Chiefs.
Fisher had said beforehand that Goff probably play about a half.
In Saturday night’s preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys, Jared Goff’s start was not so stellar to say the least.
Goff played the next two series, completing four of nine passes for 38 yards. But Cooper dropped the ball, and Goff was sacked on the next play. Mannion had one pass intercepted. Keenum played the first three series, completing six of seven passes for 58 yards, and led the Rams to one touchdown.
Rookie Tight End Tyler Higbee – Former fourth round pick from Western Michigan had an impressive outing against the Cowboys in the first half.
Of the 10 passes they completed in the first half, only two went to wide receivers.
He was 10 of 12 passing, for 139 yards, before being replaced in the third quarter by Jameill Showers.
“I think the best thing about Dak is that he is extremely calm,” Bryant said. “It’s like he’s been here before. He is going to be very good; he’s special”. Rams running back Todd Gurley and defensive end Robert Quinn didn’t play.
There was a lot of pageantry surrounding the game – and some big prices.
A Dan Bailey field goal was eventually tacked on and Dallas was atop the scoreboard 24-7 at intermission and had many, no doubt realizing they just dropped a Ben Franklin on parking, wishing they could hand the Rams back to St. Louis.
As expected, incumbent quarterback Case Keenum started for the Rams, played three series and oversaw two three-and-out possessions and one nice eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive.
