Mother: Milwaukee shooting victim was 23-year-old black man
Police violence against black men and women has sparked intermittent, sometimes violent protests in US cities from Ferguson, Baltimore and NY in the past two years. Police said three people were arrested, and one officer was hurt by a brick thrown into a squad auto.
A large, tense and often violent crowd threw rocks, fired gunshots, looted, and set vehicles and buildings on fire after a fatal police shooting earlier in the day. Most were from Greater New Birth Church, and wore red T-shirts that read “Grace Stop the Violence” as they sang songs and prayed.
She said MPD officers finally moved in and started dispersing the crowd early Sunday morning. At least three people have been detained.
Flynn said the city’s ShotSpotter system recorded 48 instances of gunfire.
The officer had been placed on administrative leave, as is standard in such situations, Flynn said. That includes a female officer who was concussed and needed seven stitches after being struck by concrete.
Flynn said one 16-year-old female had been shot – possibly by a stray bullet – and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Barrett called for empathy for Smith’s family. He says they did not fire a shot.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said during a press conference on Sunday that the officer “ordered that individual to drop his gun, the individual did not drop his gun”.
The National Guard is activated but it will not be deployed unless authorized by police Chief Edward Flynn, Barrett said.
Protesters in a poor, predominantly black neighbourhood of the United States midwestern city of Milwaukee fired gunshots, hurled bricks and set a gas station on fire on Saturday night after a patrol officer shot dead an armed suspect there, authorities said. “And that’s justifiable”, Patrick Smith told FOX6 on Sunday, making it clear that he acknowledged the issues of racial inequality that come into play in police shootings. Online court records showed a range of charges against Smith, many of them misdemeanors.
The police department says the officer was wearing a body camera that it believes was operational during the stop and chase. The victim of that burglary reported 500 rounds of ammunition were also stolen along with the gun.
Smith was accused in a shooting previous year and charged with recklessly endangering safety, a felony.
A Milwaukee police spokesman didn’t immediately respond to messages seeking confirmation of Smith as the suspect.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke told reporters on Sunday afternoon that Smith had been arrested 13 times previously.
Walker said the Guard would be “in a position to aid local law enforcement upon request”. “I join Milwaukee’s leaders and citizens in calling for continued peace and prayer”. Ms Jarrett briefed the president after speaking with Mr Barrett and offering federal support for local authorities. Rainey said at the news conference with Barrett.
Obama is opening a second week of vacation on the MA island of Martha’s Vineyard.
The union also shot back on suggestions that race might have had anything to do with the fatal shooting, stating that, “our ranks are broad and diverse; derived from all God’s children”.
City Alderman Khalif Rainey said the area has been a “powder keg” for potential violence throughout the summer. He says he has consulted with Gov. Scott Walker.
Milwaukee police said in a statement that at approximately 3:30 p.m., two uniformed officers stopped two male occupants in a vehicle, who proceeded to flee the scene on foot.
A woman has meanwhile identified her 23-year-old son as the man fatally shot by Milwaukee police.
Protesters also set fire to a gas station.
Meanwhile Wisconsin’s governor put the National Guard on standby against any further violence on the city’s mostly black north side. “What you saw last night was tremendous restraint by our police officers”.
The rioting occurred after a police officer shot and killed an armed male. He isn’t sure he’ll rebuild.
Police said crowds also broke the windows of an unoccupied squad auto and torched another.
“He had the gun with him and the officer fired several times”, Barrett said. According to police, between 200 and 800 people were part of the protests.
Six businesses were burned in the unrest that spilled past midnight on Sunday.
Darlene Rose, 31, said that she understood the anger that fuelled the violence, but it did not help. A police officer was injured when someone threw a brick into his squad auto.
“It’s unfortunate what happened to that young man”, said Cynthia Wilson.
The unidentified suspect was shot twice, in the arm and chest, the mayor said.
