Abby Wambach believes USWNT accomplished ‘something big’ by winning Women’s
It would be tougher for Wambach to make the 2016 Olympics than the 2015 World Cup not only because she will be one year older, but also because the Olympic roster size is 18 players.
“I haven’t made a decision about the Olympics next summer and I would have to make the 18-player roster, first and foremost”, she said.
The chances of Abby Wambach ever suiting up for the Seattle Reign were always a bit slim, and the team officials have said along they didn’t expect her to play this year.
While Wambach isn’t the full-time contributor that she used to be, we saw this past World Cup that she still has something that she can bring to the table for this team.
The Summer Olympics in Rio will take place August 5-21. I haven’t decided about what I’m going to do. She won’t play in NWSL this season, so that’s out, but she is hoping to play in the Americans’ friendlies over the next five months as they tour the country celebrating their world championship. “I believe that this is something that I owe to the next generation”. I know that I’ve made this game better. She has not closed the door on trying for her fifth Olympic team. “There would’ve been more goals scored in the World Cup if it was on natural grass”. Frankly, it’s not even clear if she’d be much more than another weapon of Laura Harvey’s bench even if she did sign. She helped the U.S. beat Japan in the finale, entering as a substitute in her 25th and final Women’s World Cup match.

Other younger and experienced U.S. forwards that could challenge Wambach for the spot include Alex Morgan, Sydney Leroux, Christen Press and Amy Rodriguez.
