James Vince axed from England one-day squad for Pakistan series
Ben Stokes has been named in the England squad for the One-Day International series against Pakistan, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced on Tuesday (August 16).
England has named uncapped left-arm orthodox Liam Dawson after his decent three for 20 in the only Twenty20 global against Sri Lanka earlier this year.
Wood has twice undergone surgery on his ankle but bowled with impressive pace to help Durham beat Gloucestershire at Bristol and book a place at Finals Day; Stokes also had an operation, on a knee injury suffered during the Sri Lanka Test series, and then hurt his calf playing against Pakistan at Old Trafford.
“Ben’s made really significant progress over the last three weeks and our medical team are pleased”, National Selector James Whitaker said in a statement. “He’s progressing nicely towards bowling over the next week or so, and while we hope that initially he might just play as a batter he will lead into the series as an all-rounder eventually”.
Five players with Big Bash experience, including captain Eoin Morgan, feature in England’s team to play against Pakistan in a five-match ODI series.
Vince, who made 51 against Sri Lanka in an ODI in July, scored 158 runs in the four-Test series with Pakistan at an average of 22, with a top score of 42.
With England set to tour Bangladesh and India, where pitches usually assist spinners, Dawson will be looking to push his case as the third specialist slow bowler behind Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid.
The Hampshire all-rounder made an impressive global debut in the IT20 against Sri Lanka at the Ageas Bowl in July, taking 3-27, but has never played an ODI.
Buttler, 25, has been sidelined since fracturing his thumb playing for Lancashire at Worcester on 8 July, while captain Morgan chipped a bone in his little finger in a One-Day Cup match at Taunton on 26 July.
Whitaker acknowledged he was impressed by Dawson’s consistency. “So there’s three or four players there pushing for batting spots – I think that’s incredibly healthy for English cricket”, he said. “We’ve had a lot of confidence come out of our one-day team over the last 18 months, and this selection just emphasises how well they’ve done”.
