Britain’s cycling star Trott claims historic fourth gold
Brilliant Laura Trott triumphed in the women’s omnium at Rio 2016 to become the first British female athlete ever to win four Olympic gold medals.
This is the second silver medal for Hammer at this year’s Olympics. I didn’t expect that at all.
Trott went into the final race 24 points ahead and started slowly but maintained a steady speed to ensure none of her rivals would close on her point tally.
Giles Scott has won gold in sailing’s Finn class, becoming Britain’s 17th gold medal victor at the Rio Olympics.
“I can’t believe I’ve got four”, she said, fighting back the tears. “I am just so happy that it all came together – I can’t thank everyone at home enough”.
The remaining two events on Tuesday are the flying lap at 20:10 BST and the points race at 21:05 BST.
Trott’s fiancé Jason Kenny, seeking a record equalling sixth Olympic gold medal for a Briton, qualified for the keirin final, with the man he hopes to emulate, Sir Chris Hoy, victor of that event in London four years ago.
“They really help me and I couldn’t have done it without everyone, especially Paul Manning my coach”.
The 24-year-old finished second in the scratch race before winning the individual pursuit and elimination events. I’m literally over the moon.
Sarah Hammer won a silver medal in the women’s omnium cycling event Tuesday afternoon.
The two cyclists dueled throughout the race, but Hammer was able to edge out D’Hoore at the final three sprint points, winning the race and taking the silver medal, definitely, behind Great Britain’s Laura Trott.
