Biden: Trump is ‘thoroughly unqualified’ for presidency
Versions of the device go everywhere the president goes, but the vice president, too – in case something renders his boss unable to make a launch decision.
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Vice-President Joe Biden are welcomed to Scranton by a crowd of about 3,000.
She acknowledged that many people in the audience might have friends considering voting for the Republican, but offered this advice: “Friends should not let friends vote for Trump”. Clinton noted her grandfather worked at a Scranton lace mill factory and that her father was raised here and later attended Penn State University.
Biden heaped praise on Clinton, touting their shared working class roots and invoking the significance Clinton’s presidency will have on women and girls seeking higher office.
“He gives her instant credibility with portions of the electorate – blue-collar workers and seniors”, Schale said.
Without getting into evaluating Trump’s campaign proposals, Biden emphasized in his speech that the magnate’s ideas are “not only profoundly wrong, they’re very risky and they’re very un-American”.
Biden and Clinton, then both in the Senate, vied against each other for the nomination in 2008, when fellow senator Barack Obama defeated them.
The speech came minutes before Trump delivered what his campaign has billed as a major address on his ideas for national security and foreign policy.
He said Mr Trump favoured Russian president Vladimir Putin, he “showered praise on Saddam Hussein, one of the most violent dictators of the 20th century”, advocated the use of torture and the killing of criminal suspects’ family members, and encouraged the Middle East to build their own nuclear weapons. While another said she just wants to Clinton to admit she was wrong and move on.
“There’s only one person in this election who will possibly help you and that is Hillary Clinton”, he says. He officially declined a bid in October, five months after his son, Beau, died from brain cancer. “She’s always been there”.
Clinton’s campaign released her 2015 tax returns Friday, showing that she and her husband, former president Bill Clinton, earned almost $11 million a year ago, much of it from paid speeches.
The Clinton campaign had planned the event to focus on the economy, and the two assailed Trump’s plans and touted the Democratic nominee’s own agenda.
But Biden is also expected to testify to Clinton’s credentials and empathy, portraying her as the nominee who understands the challenges faced by the working class.
“He would have loved Stalin”, Biden said twice. However, Sanford is backing the nominee because of the Supreme Court vacancy and the possibility that the next president could fill several openings.
On foreign policy, Clinton called Trump out for being secretive about his plans, adding “the secret is he has no plan”.
Biden’s speech also included lengthy accounts of growing up in Scranton with a working class family.
Pennsylvania is one of the crucial states for Trump in manufacturing a November election victory due to its socio-economic make-up, being predominately comprised of white working class voters with relatively little post-high school education who have been severely affected by US deindustrialization.
“Trump’s ideas are not only profoundly wrong, they’re very risky and they’re very un-American”, he continued, echoing Clinton’s earlier criticisms.
