Blue Jays rally for 8 runs in 8th inning, beat Yankees 12
J.A. Happ pitched 7 1/3 innings and became the first 17-game victor in the major leagues Wednesday afternoon as the Toronto Blue Jays held on for a 7-4 victory over the New York Yankees. Sanchez has five home runs and 12 RBI in 13 games. The stoppage spelled the end of Michael Pineda’s strong start, and the Blue Jays pounced on Yankees reliever Anthony Swarzak in the sixth.
The bright spot of last night’s loss, Gary Sanchez, will DH and bat cleanup in a day game after night game scenario.
Starlin Castro cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth inning with his career-high 15th homer, and Headley later added his 11th homer of the season.
The Yanks will look to salvage the series as CC Sabathia (7-9, 4.20 ERA) goes up against J.A. Happ (16-3, 2.96 ERA) in a battle of southpaws. After Devon Travis singled to lead off the inning, Chase Headley made a couple of mistakes in the field costing the Yankees some outs. After Russel Martin brought in a run with a single, Upton hit a three-run home run a couple batters later. Travis hit an RBI single, and Donaldson drove in a run with his second walk of the inning. Tulowitzki also went deep to help the Blue Jays pull off their biggest comeback of the season and move back atop the AL East, just ahead of Baltimore and Boston. Gibbons took exception to Donaldson’s act of aggression – the bat could have shattered and gone anywhere – and confronted him, leading to an argument that caused several Blue Jays players to intervene. He stepped on third to get the first out, but his throw to first was off, and Tyler Austin couldn’t get it.
But they needed more than that to overcome Sabathia’s outing.
It was just the eighth time in the past 100 years that a pitcher allowed seven or more runs while recording 12 or more strikeouts. The lefty had a season-high 12 strikeouts, but Toronto still knocked him around.
According to Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com, Donaldson was taken out of the game after jamming his right thumb during the game against NY.
