Android 5.1.1 comes to the NVIDIA Shield Tablet
NVIDIA’s recall notice doesn’t mention how defective tablets will be collected, though the page does mention that defective tablets “will be deactivated remotely and rendered unusable” once owners receive their replacements. To do this, NVIDIA has pushed out a new SHIELD software update, SHIELD Tablet software 3.1 (their release of Android 5.1.1) which includes additional battery information in the Tablet’s About screen.
According to Nvidia, the battery in these tablets can overheat and pose a fire hazard, which is why the company has confirmed that it will be replacing all these tablets.
NVIDIA is issuing a recall on SHIELD tablets produced between July 2014 and July 2015.
Keep in mind though that the recall only applies to tablets with a certain battery type. Tap on the Setting icon and scroll down to select About tablet.
The company also stresses that you should stop using recalled devices immediately, apart from as needed to complete the recall process.
Check the Battery category and you should see either “Y01” or “B01”. If you’ve got a “Y01” model, you may want to ensure that your data is backed up.
Once you’ve launched the recall app, you’ll get a notification with your device’s serial number.
