Black Lives Matter Activists Used Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” as Protest Song
Well, Fox News may have been right about one thing-Kendrick Lamar is having an impact on youth culture.
While it was reflective of the social climate and the opposite of contemporary hip-hop, still the album spoke volumes from the dance floor to the classroom.
The students were reportedly directing K.Dot’s powerful words to the police outside of CSU.
The group’s use of Alright comes in light of FOX News’ suggestion that the song’s lyrics send “the wrong message”. Back in 2004, Lamar’s first album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, was the subject of an English composition course at Georgia Regents University.
“Alright” is an uplifting anthem that addresses the plight of black people including police brutality and racism.
This comes after police officers arrested a 14-year-old boy for heavy underage drinking while out in public, as previously reported by HNGN.
At 4:40 p.m. today, July 26, Transit Police officers on routine patrol peacefully removed a intoxicated 14-year old male from a bus. Police said the juvenile was intoxicated to the point where he was unable to care for himself.
The students were undeterred, however, as they locked arms and chanted the chorus to Lamar’s “Alright“, which is a song about hope and being able to stand strong despite the difficulties, according to The Independent UK.
Transit Police followed normal procedure, which is – after pertinent information is collected, to release the juvenile to a parent or legal guardian. They were then met by a large crowd, many of whom were attendees of the university conference. The crowd then surrounded the auto, with some individuals pounding on the vehicle in an attempt to remove the juvenile from the auto. For the safety of the juvenile, Transit Police moved him from the open shelter area to a police cruiser.
The crowd that surrounded the police cruiser kept it from leaving the area. When the crowd grows and try to block the police vehicle, officers respond with pepper spray.
The juvenile was escorted from the police cruiser to a waiting EMS unit to be examined at the scene.
Currently, the report claims that the incident is still under investigation.
