Zika case reported in Champaign County
Meanwhile, the Florida Department of Health has identified four additional people in Florida with the Zika virus, who likely contracted it through a mosquito bite.
State health officials say that while mosquitoes capable of carrying Zika have been found in 12 California counties, “there is no evidence these mosquitoes are transmitting Zika in the state at this time”.
The only known cases of the Zika virus until last month was diagnosed in people who had recently traveled out of the United States to Latin America. While the number of local transmissions continues to rise, health officials said they believe active transmissions are only taking place within a one-square mile area.
Most of the 1,825 confirmed cases of Zika in the US mainland are related to travel to Zika-infected areas, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last week.
“Zika’s impact on unborn babies can be tragic, and our hearts are with this family”, said Dr. John Hellerstedt, the state’s health commissioner, in an online statement.
Today the Florida Department of Health (Florida Health) said there was one new case of non-travel related Zika in Miami-Dade County.
Previously only symptomatic travelers returning from Zika-affected areas, their sexual partners, and pregnant women with either possible first-hand or sexual exposure to Zika were advised to get tested. “Not just to look for those mosquitoes that we know can transmit Zika (like Aedes Egypti), but also, the local mosquitoes that we don’t know yet if they transmit the virus”.
As of July 29, CDPH has confirmed 114 travel-associated Zika virus infections in 22 counties. The baby passed away shortly after birth and is the first Zika-related death reported in Texas. The first was an elderly Utah man who died in June. In Florida, 57 pregnant women have become infected.
Most people get Zika after being bitten by infected mosquitoes.
Zika is carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is known to be in the San Joaquin Valley. Most people only experience mild symptoms.
Florida is the only USA state with known cases of locally acquired Zika infection – 16 so far. “Because it is likely we’re gonna hav”.
