Amazon Lands New Jeremy Clarkson auto Show
As a reminder, in March 2015, the BBC didn’t renew Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson’s contract following an “unprovoked physical and verbal attack”. “Apparently they want us to make a auto show (sic)”. Ironic, isn’t is?’ quipped James May.
The trio have signed on for three series of the yet unnamed show, with the first to be aired worldwide next year.
Jay Marine – vice president of Amazon Prime Video EU – also stated: “Customers told us they wanted to see the team back on screen, and we are excited to make that happen”.
“Amazon beat out Netflix Inc. and major broadcasters in the bidding for the group’s new show”, WSJ reports, quoting one source saying: “We’ve never seen a horse race like this”.
Landing the ex-Top Gear presenters, as well as ex-producer and creative force behind the show Andy Wilman, is quite the coup for Amazon. When reached for comment, Hammond joked, “Amazon?” However, Wilman said the new show will likely stick to the once-a-week schedule familiar to Top Gear’s BBC Two viewers. Oh yes. I have already been there.
Richard too shared his delight, telling his followers it was time to get a hair cut, a new pair of jeans and practice driving again in preparation.
BBC said it planned to continue the wildly popular show with new hosts, including Chris Evans.
Some Twitter users bemoaned the fact they would miss out on the new show because of the fee, while others expressed disappointment that it would not be on Netflix. The show will form part of Amazon Prime’s original programming line-up, which now includes the Steven Spielberg produced Extant, and Ridley Scott’s The Man in the High Castle.
It is likely to go head to head with the BBC’s new version of Top Gear, which generates around £50 million a year for the Corporation.
