Jury finds soldier guilty in death of girlfriend’s mother

Police say the fatal attack occurred as Cheryl Silvonek talked to her daughter and Barnes and tried to persuade them to end their relationship.

Detective Heffelfinger testified that, at one point, Barnes claimed he killed his girlfriend’s mother in self-defence when she attacked him after catching the pair in the middle of a “sexual act” in her vehicle. She has agreed to testify against Barnes, who was 20 or 21 at the time. “She killed her own mother”. By the end of the conversation, Barnes said, “he already had the knives picked out”.

But prosecutors contend it was Barnes, who’s from El Paso, Texas, who wielded the knife when Cheryl Silvonek was fatally stabbed in March 2015.

‘I believe what I did was just as bad or worse than the physical act, ‘ she said.

The 22-year-old Barnes testified Friday that Jamie Silvonek, not he, killed her mother and that he helped dispose of evidence only because the teen claimed to be pregnant.

As the second day of the trial came to a close, a county detective who specializes in cellphone data recovery testified that he retrieved a number of deleted text messages between Barnes and Silvonek in which they continued to discuss the plot.

A 15-year-old Pennsylvania girl who pleaded guilty to plotting with her soldier boyfriend to kill her mother has taken the stand at his murder trial, saying in his defense she’s “inexorably, ineffably in love”. He was off-duty at the time of the killing. “I want her gone”, the affidavit said.

During her plea deal hearing in February she called herself “a monster” and said she realizes she deserves no sympathy.

“She walked calmly”, Mueller said.

Barnes’ lawyer Richard Webster says his client, an army specialist, played no role in the death but conceded he helped clean up the crime scene and bury the mother’s body. In an attack prosecutors say lasted 20 minutes, the married mother of two was beaten, choked and stabbed at least five times.

Defense attorney have not said if they will call Barnes to the stand.

He said he was woken up by Jamie Silvonek, covered in blood, banging on the auto window.

“He is not coming to this house”, Cheryl Silvonek texted to her daughter, who had taken the SAT college entrance exam that morning, according to a police affidavit.

“I never wanted that to happen to her”, Barnes said.

The 22-year-old Barnes is accused of stabbing Cheryl Silvonek in March 2015 in Pennsylvania. Jamie Silvonek wrote, the affidavit said. He turned around and grinned at her at one point of the afternoon.

Barnes is charged with criminal homicide and abuse of a corpse and faces life in jail. He will be sentenced to life in prison on September 19.

The trial is expected to wrap up on Friday. There is a gag order in place that prevents the attorneys from answering questions.
