The Oscar-winning Scottish actor will play the elderly, male Tibetan mystic in Marvel’s upcoming Benedict Cumberbatch-led movie. but insists that she “wasn’t asked to play an Asian character, you can be very well assured of that”. A man who studied for years and years to become one of the greatest surgeons in the world, with enough practice to give him godlike skills of precision in his hands.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Cumberbatch said that it isn’t Strange’s powers or his Cloak of Levitation that makes him a hero – it’s his determination to get up and try again that makes him worthy of the title. It’s about his staying power. But the Ancient One that tutors Benedict Cumberbatch’s unusual in the art of magic was also originally Asian, causing backlash that Swinton responded to in Entertainment Weekly’s Fall Movie Preview.
Nevertheless, Swinton and Marvel are sure to keep urging people to see Doctor Strange before making a final judgement.
Joining Cumberbatch in the new cast are Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Mads Mikkelsen as Kaecilius, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, Benedict Wong as Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, and Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West.
As well as being in the director’s chair, Derrickson has also teamed up with C. Robert Cargill to pen the film’s screenplay, which is based on the comic book by Steve Ditko. Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange opens in 3D on November 4.
The Marvel film follows the story of odd who must put his ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Derrickson worked with cinematographer Ben Davis, who shot Kick-Ass but is also well versed in the Marvel language having served as the DP for Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
