Facebook aims for better games with new partner Unity
Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) has announced that it will be collaborating with Unity Technologies to enable game maker to create new games that can be exported and published on Facebook. Unity is a global development platform for creating 2D, 3D, VR and AR games.
Nevertheless, the new Unity partnership, as well as other recent gaming initiatives Facebook has pursued, is likely prompted by the shift of casual gaming to mobile apps.
The platform is now in a closed-alpha build that some of the more prominent developers of Facebook titles have been invited to test.
Unity gives developers an easier way of creating video games by letting them utilize the platform’s established software engine rather than having to build the same components themselves from scratch.
Studios have until August 31st to apply for access, and can do so here.
Facebook is in a war for sorts; the war for gaining more users and engaging them on the social network.
Unity developers may soon have access to a huge new audience.
Besides launching a digital platform, Facebook’s plan to expand its game development tools includes a bolstered Facebook.com gaming experience. The Unity engine is nigh-omnipresent in game development, so the scope could potentially be very broad. And down the road the prospect of more proper games appearing on Facebook, instead of the free-to-play trash that most commonly appears in my notifications, is intriguing. Unity’s powerful graphics engine and full-featured editor serve as the foundation to develop handsome games or apps and easily bring them to multiple platforms: mobile devices, home entertainment systems, personal computers, and embedded systems. These exported games will go to the Facebook app and even the website.
Facebook is launching its own PC gaming platform. We will see if Unity will bring them more users and what games they prepared for us.
